I want to not just have character free-roleplay for nothing, but some kind of system where they would see progress on certain things. So that the scenarios are not just combat-focused, we should have some kind of training system as well.

For those that say, want to do R&D, or study physics, or Sith Lore.. or even Naval Tactics, etc.
How do we make a system that is fair, given this is mostly going to be an independent roleplay?

I'm a little confused on this, care to elaborate?

Are you talking about IC or OOC?

agreed, it should not just be to travel around to gain stat points

*cough*swc*cough*

perhaps a certain personal rp/stat system: to start a system for stats, it sorts each out into categories, when a character rps themselves, appropriately of course, the mod assigns a certain amount of points, within reason to an individual stat or category, and inputs it into the system, for the character to do with as they see fit

this of course would require a complicated program, writing of which i can barely grasp the concept of, although i am trying desperately to learn...

Well this can be addressed through an easy system based on the task.

R&D the Death Star = requiring several scientist, many months, money, etc. The DC on the individual parts of the project would vary from DC 10-DC 40 for some rolls.

Study Naval Tactics = Time, something to learn from. DC 15.

We can whip up a very simple system for people who wish to develope their characters. And by putting time limits on the rolls for things that require lots of time, it brings the mod duty way down.

I'm sorry to intrude, but I couldn't help reading the topic. If you are implementing this system, what is holding people from 'training' all the time instead of interacting with everybody else?

Well the fact that training could easily take months.

Another factor is that you probably won't get a lot of xp for training. There barely any risk and training needs a master. Self training doesn't work without someone t teach or something to do trail and error and need some kind of risk to become skilled (hence gain some XP)

XP gained from training should be very low compared to having several people on opposite side trying to accomplish something against the other.

How about awarding some skill bonuses or a stackable feat upon successful completion of a training RP ?

Something, that gives you +1/2 in tactics or craft for example.

Could someone in your group that has a higher skill level in a certain skill(maybe some 2 levels or more above to be able to "teach" someone else) train you. This could be a squad leader training a member/s in something for example.

Yeah, that would also finally put the train skill to good use.

Good idea Cool

My thoughts on training would be that it would take place on the GM forums, and that everybody should train as long as there not involved in any kind of scenario. Pilots and Soldiers are expected to train themselves, as are officers or spys.
Joining a scenario gives XP (hopefully) those might bring you to another level so you can learn new skills. Writing about you training yourself or others will also give XP which in turn will level you so you can raise your trained skill.
So I would advise not to give skillbonuses to people that train, instead I would give them XP which hopefully ammounts to the same thing.
This would also give players something to do and a story to write while they´re waiting on a scenario.

I´m asking myself if we should encourage ppl to post these trainingscenarios on the IC boards here instead of the MGboards so that others could read them and get an idea how to train properly. In most cases it wouldn´t require a dieroll since the Moderator will assess the training and give XP.

Ex, Khazaar goes to the shooting gallery and trains his Blaster. This shouldn´t require a roll. On the other hand Evaders and Uliq Cool start to design the DEATH STAR with a team of scientists and lots of money. This would take a lot of posting and quite a few rolls. Evaders manages to design a prototype (sucsessful hidden Moderator die roll) but Uliq botches it and gives the design a deadly construction flaw (totally by mistake, of course Twisted Evil ). Evader and the scientists check their design and find no errors (failed hidden Moderator roll). The design is complete and construction beginns and Uliq is nowhere to be found Cool .

I think you nailed it on the head Khazaar. That's how I'd invision it. If we make the IC boards the hub of all activity on a character level that people want xp for it'd be easier for mods to look over as they wouldn't have to go site to site.
