Okay, so... The setup looks awesome. But. It seems to me that you need a lot of (active) players to make it work, and it looks like there's hardly any. Am I wrong? Is all the activity just hidden from people who aren't in the group?
From reading the FAQ and such I envisioned this as people having missions (handed down or self-determined), working with and against each other in accordance to the mechanical rules of the game to achieve tangible goals...
That's the game I'm very excited to play in.
But instead from poking around it looks like three small, very loosely-related, social interaction RPs.
Which is fine and all, it's just not what I'm looking for.
So I guess my question is... What are my chances of actually finding what I'm looking for, here?

Can't have active members without activity.. can't have activity without active members
What can we say? There aren't enough movers and many people sitting around waiting for things to move.

tenketsu,
I've have been trying for that for almost a year now. Let me tell you this, things are much better than they were when I got here. I came for the same reasons you did. Things are starting to move around. We've have a core group that has been working things out for rules and such and gotten alot done, and I will say, it looks promising.
Sooner or later we will get an influx of people, why you ask? Well, our lead moderator with the cooperation of the various faction leaders are getting rules ready to go. You can't judge the game play by looking from the outside in. Just try it for yourself. There are opportunities.
Things are developing, we just get to use the Army's time honored tradition of hurry up and wait. Civil War is on the onset. This doesn't follow cannon, things happen because of what actions the players create, or what they do lead to larger, and bigger things.
Just be active and keep progressive, because there are those who share your view and like myself are willing to get this moving along with more combat.
Here's somewhat of a course of events,
The Rebel Alliance is not yet announced yet, contrary to popular belief. Like the cannon seemlier, announcing itself be it's ready to fight would lead to it's destruction.
The Galactic Empire has neglected galactic issues and this has lead to the creation of Core World's Alliance. Many of Core World's have pronounced their independence from what they believe is mistreatment by the galactic Empire. So if the Rebels can secure an alliance with the CWA, things can change and lead to Galactic Civil War.
Just like the real cannon Galaxy of Star Wars, nothing happens right away, and if your rush in right away with knowing the consequences it can create, you easily end up dead.
Point in case, the more active, progressive players will do better and end up getting this game in gear (not saying it isn't) All you have to do is ask where your needed, do your mission, RP and earn XP and you'll do well in SWCIC. By the way, what Master Group do you plan joining if you were convinced on joining?

I could easily create a character to fit in any of the three and be happy with it, really. The main thing is--challenges to overcome. It doesn't necessarily have to be other PCs, NPCs work fine as long as there's someone running them on the other end, and it doesn't have to be combat, either. I just want to be able to start working on a goal, have the obstacles to that goal delineated (to the limits of my character's ability to perceive them), state my attempt to overcome those obstacles, have my success or failure impartially communicated back to me, and then see the results of that success or failure play out in the immediate and long-term (if the goal was audacious enough). So really for my purposes, while I'd like to see other PC's activity affecting things all around my character, the most important factor is actually moderator/GM activity.
And of course I understand time restraints on the higher-ups and their limited numbers make that pretty difficult--so that's probably pie-in-the-sky. If it were possible and sustainable, though, not only would it catch and hold my interest, but I have a fair few friends and acquaintances who would most likely be quite interested too.

Well there other ranking individuals besides the actual Master Group leaders themselves. There are quite a bit mid ranking and lower ranking PC's within a group.
When you get to the right rank, your commander of your branch might give you various assets based on how well he/she believes you have done on a recent mission, campaign, task, etc. There are plenty of goals to be achieved, and that can be accomplished by talking to your branch CO, or even the MG CO. After doing this for a while, you'll find yourself in some favorable conditions, then set another goal. The key is to set multiple smaller goals to achieve the larger, long term goals.
Also, you can defect from a MG and join the other offering your skills and information. The oppertunities are boundless to what you can do. Your only limited to how far you plan on going.
Someone with your enthusiam and drive plus activity could make a name for themselves here. Keep that up once you've pledged yourself to a MG, and you can increase in rank and responsibilites.
If your still wanting to know more from me, just ask, and ask any questions. If you decide to come over to the RA, I'd be happy to help get situated and ready for what lies ahead. On a last note, to answer questions fully, your better off just giving it a try, then formulating your conclusion.

remember too, that until your character is created and your part of an MG, you won't get to see all the boards. Our "in character" boards are hidden. And each MG's boards are hidden from other MG's.
Most of us that are here are very active, not just with RPing, but modifying the rules, creating art, developing backgrounds and plots. So if you would like to participate in that, its there. If you have suggestions to make things better, lets here that too. This sim isn't set in stone, its been slowly changing over the months, especially since SAGA has come out.
If you have questions about which MG to join, ask away. Some have more characters that others. So you would be able to influence one of the smaller MG's if you join them. Plus the interaction between MG's would be much better.

I believe what can be said, has been said. So now, it's up to you. Feel free to ask any questions, and I think you'd make a tremondous impact on joining the Galactic Empire. So ask away.

To simplify it... Everything is limitedo to Your immagination...
If You will have ideas and plan then everything will be fine...
Part of the reason I've been holding off from trying it out is because I can't make a mistake here at the beginning--if I create a Syndicate character, for instance, then decide I really should've made that Imperial officer instead, I'm mostly stuck. But, logically, I'm not losing anything by that that I don't already lose by not trying in the first place, so...

*shrugs*
If we use that example and say you wouldn't like that char, you can always have it killed and create a new one, after waiting the usual 7 days. During that time you can already sign up with the other group though and get to know them.
It's alllll in the rules, even how much xp your new char gets from the old one (if there's any)

From what I was reading in the rules I thought it said it was 3 weeks you had to wait, and it seemed like a lot of hoops along with that as well. Perhaps I read it wrong.

There are certain rules to encourage people not to continue hopping from group to group. I'm sure each group wants to maintain its member base, but if there situations that you want to get out of a group, there is always defection. It is not to give people a free pass, but to encourage groups to work it out before coming to us to solve their problems.

That is correct. We want people to make a good decision, so if you need more information, posting here is a good spot to start.
As for roleplay chances, I'm trying to increase the number of moderators and make rules more easier to work with regarding scenarios and other roleplayiing opportunities. So keep an eye up for those. :)
