You need some form of IRC client to connect to the IRC server. There are a many clients to choose from, and among the most popular are: mIRC, XChat, ChatZilla, IRC plugin to Miranda IM. Miranda IM and mIRC are Windows only clients, with XChat and ChatZilla available to most platforms.
Which client too choose then?
Code:
Client: Pros Cons
mIRC Widely used, very Shareware, so it's not
configurable entirely free, doesn't handle
UTF-8 encoding
XChat Free, UTF-8 support Low configurability without scripts
ChatZilla Free, UTF-8 support Requires a Mozilla based browser
Miranda IM plugin Free, small Requires the Miranda IM client
If you plan to someday speak in a language that uses more characters than the english alphabet, choosing a client that's
capable of UTF-8 is a good move. The author behind mIRC has told that UTF-8 is on the todo list, but nothing has happened since 2003.
Commands
In IRC you use written commands to do things, even though most clients provides buttons or menus for the most used commands. If you in the textbox write a line with a slash (/) in the beginning, the following text is assumed to be a command by the server. Most of the commands is composed of the command it self, and a couple of arguments. For example, /join #swcic is composed of the command /join and the argument #swcic. With this command you join a channel. Below is a list of common commands that are good to know about
Code:
/join #channel joins the channel #channel
/part #channel parts the channel, if channel is left out, leaves the current channel
/server server.name.com connects to the irc server
/quit message disconnects from the server, and displays the optional message
/nick nickname changes your nickname
/me text the text is displayed as a description of what you're doing
/away description sets you as away with a optional description
/msg nickname sends a message to nickname
/query nickname opens a new window where only you and nickname sees the conversation
If you haven't set your nickname to something you like when you connect to the server, it's probably a good idea to issue the command /nick with your nickname of choice. Your nickname may contain most characters available to you in the ASCII character set. However, the nickname cannot start with #,@,%,&,+,/, any number and some other characters. The # character signifies that the name is a channel, @,&,%,+ signifies user levels in a channel.
You can register your nickname on the server, and this allows some access control to be used in channels that is registered. If you want to register your nick, write the following in the server window, or a channel window, but it's preferable to do it in the server window in case you do a mistake and forget to send the text as a command.
This will register the nickname and a send a authentication code to the supplied email.
Code:
/msg NickServ AUTH code
Run this command when you have recieved your authentication code. Sometimes there is problem with the email not being sent out properly. If that happens, join the #help channel and request assistance.
Now that you've registered your nick you must identify yourself to the NickServ service
Code:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
But what to do if you would like to have several nicknames registered? Then you can link nicknames to your primary nickname
Code:
/msg NickServ LINK newnickname
See www.irchelp.org for more information regarding IRC, or the homepages for the respective program for more details concerning that program.

the e-key is poking Uliq's eye again
Why do you think I called it #hidden_ ...
apart from relating to an Akira Kurasawa flick ?

Uliq, it's not hidden. You can find it if you type '/list'.

If you not in the room, you can't see it on the list. If you are in the room, and you do /list then you can see it.

Only if BK were still around
And Jesfa, The Speak Easy is classic. You know..the underground bars of the prohibition era. It suits us well.

Alright, is the #hs-speakeasy going to be the official OOC channel for the Syndicate?
And do the rebels want to remove the now not secret channel?

no, we're keeping this. At least for the outside. Uliq can make another if he wants it hidden.

We can still check for membership cards, to find out, if others are sneaking in
