Character Creation FAQ - TheWord

Contents

Why is my favorite race not here? Can I not be Chiss? What about Noghri?

There are eleven races. More may be added, but definitely will not be until there is a larger population and greater racial diversity present and active in the game. At that time, the Administration will evaluate potential 'expansion races'.

Why is there this whole huge emphasis on my name? My handle is good enough! Stop making such a big deal about it.

Pick a 'real' name; it is not that hard. Use a name that actually sounds like a name, not 'l33tkilla23'. It is very frustrating for role-players to break from their in-character discussions with Captains Lake, Palmer, and Emerson, and then turn to Ensign B4rb4r!4nK!ng and attempt to continue the effort. It is a basic request. Honor it. And, as a bit of friendly advice: Fett? Fel? Solo? Skywalker? Yes, they have been done.

Homeworld? Um? I do not know ? why should I care?

There are some feats available only at level one that reflect certain traits of certain homeworlds. Additionally, your homeworld is a significant part of your character's identity, and given our heavy emphasis on role-playing, such consideration on your part may just prove wise. You can find a lot of metropolitan examples in the Star Wars novels, in our forums, in comic books, and video games.

Note: Homeworld related feats may be dropped. However, circumstance bonus to knowledge checks and other skills check will be applied related to homeworld such as history, gather information, and so on.

Classes? What are those?

Your 'class' is a general description of the sort of career or archetype that you follow in your training and progression. Your class determines the broad range of your skills and abilities.

Ok. How many Classes are there and how do I choose them?

There are twelve coded classes. Your choice of MasterGroup will determine your starting class choices, and your career from there can lead you to new professions. Additional classes will be added in the future, but the Administration intends to keep these to a minimum. We are not providing a comprehensive list of classes for perusal, but most basic favorites should be available to you. As you continue in your chosen career, classes and various feats will become available to you through discovery, training, and discussion with other people.

What are all these skills?

Skills are just that - skills. 'Athletics', 'Pilot', 'Train', 'Track', and many others are available. Depending on certain situations, you will be able to draw on your skills for certain checks. For example, if you had a rank of 8 in 'Track' you would have a better chance of following a trail than if you had a 'Track' rank of 3.

Why is it when I select Skills that some are bolded and others are not?

Bolded skills are contingent on your class, and some are easier for you to learn than others based on your career path - thus, the bolded skills represent those skills which are consistent with the career path of the class you are.

What is a Feat? How is that different from a Skill?

A feat either grants your character a new ability or improves on an existing ability. Feats are gained as part of your progression in one of the character classes and at regular intervals as you advance in level, regardless of class. Unlike Skills, you do not put ranks into Feats...you either have a feat or you do not.

Can I ever raise my abilities? Like get stronger? Smarter?

Yes, every four levels you may add one point to your ability scores. There are also clearly-labeled feats which do the same.

Do certain species hold special feats/skills/abilities?

Yes, some are stronger, others are faster, and others have natural predilections to certain skills or climates or abilities. This means that certain species will receive bonuses to abilities, and such. The Administration will not be disclosing which species provide which bonuses, but species will match certain perks they have been known to have in canon.

What is the difference between Vitality Points and Wound Points?

Vitality relates to a generalized sense of "superficial" damage, such as cuts, scrapes, exhaustion, and fatigue. Wound points deal directly with significant injuries, such as a broken arm or a collapsed lung, or through poison.

Note: We're changing system and the above is no longer applicable to the new system. The new system uses Hit Points and Condition Track for more balanced approach (Saga Edition).

What does Speed mean? Why is it measured in meters?

Speed is how fast you can run or move yourself across the ground. While this may not be so important for a large scale battle with tanks and speeders, it does matter in the personal-sphere interactions. It is measured in meters because well, the rest of the world uses the metric system. And so does D20.

Note: This may be changed to squares.

Wait ? where is Force Sensitivity? I want to be a Jedi!

Force Sensitivity is not available in the game yet. It will be included but the game Administration is very concerned with game balance. This includes the abilities of Force users as well as how many there are populating the galaxy. There will be opportunity in the future, though the mechanism will likely demand a significant element of risk - meaning you may want it, and gamble to get it, and not be happy with the results. Keep in mind that the vast majority of the Force Traditions will require PC-to-PC training.

Note: The new system will include Force abilities and skills. However, to be Force Sensitive, you must choose the Force Sensitivity Chance feat at first level. Each level thereafter, you have a small chance of becoming Force Sensitive and thus open the possibility of becoming a Jedi, or other force using group.

I don't know what all of these Attributes, and Saving Throws stuff is at the top of my character sheet.

Some of these are generated from the class, and others may have come directly from your race. Ninety-nine percent of the time, though, it is out of your class or derived from your ability scores.

A lot of this just looks like the Wizards of the Coast d20 stuff? Like Knights of the Old Republic or Neverwinter Nights.

Well, there is a reason for that sort of familiarity - we used the Open Source d20 System as a foundation to our efforts. We have eliminated elements, condensed others, changed features, and added several more to capitalize on the larger scale of PC-interaction with the galaxy that our game here attempts to offer. Also, we will not be showcasing the d20 rules; this is a Simulation-wide policy: we will not be posting published material. If you need them for personal reference, we are certain that Wizards of the Coast would be very thankful for your patronage.

Why can I not just see all my options all at once?

This is not an option which we are offering. As you go along, and grow in power, prestige, and potency, you will need to be communicating with your peers in the game. Find out what they trained themselves in, and whether it worked out well for them. Tell others of your efforts. Communicate. Socialize. Pick a career that seems to follow what you wish to do. Focus on role-playing, not roll-playing. A mistake while 'leveling up' may not be a tragedy, communication is always good, and training facilities do allow you a measure of self-definition and selection. No, mistakes will not be corrected for you.

What if I make a mistake while creating my character?

The best answer to this question is the simple statement "do not make a mistake with your character." Character Creation is a one time opportunity, and you should take time and consideration while selecting your species, classes, feats, and skills.

That said, if you do make a mistake with your Character it is not the end of the world. Every time you level up you will be able to select new classes, skills and feats. The best way to avoid mistakes from the beginning, however, would be to speak with those who have already created their character- so get in touch with your MasterGroup before diving into Character Creation.

What browsers does Character Creation support?

The Character Creation System was designed, developed, and tested with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0. No other browsers have been tested, and it is suggested that all use Internet Explorer while using the Character Creation system.

Why is the Character Creation System not working for me?

Character Creation has been tested by the entire Development team, and we have tried our best to catch all the bugs we could. However, if you feel you have found a legitimate new bug you should report it to the Technical Support Forum. Note that you should only go this forum if you have already A) Read through this entire FAQ, and B) Contacted your MasterGroup to make sure you are using the Character Creation System properly.

I read, that I'm supposed to get an email from my mastergroup with instructions, where is it ?

Make sure to check the spam folder of your email account. It would be a real shame, if you couldn't start playing, because you think you were forgotten, while your mastergroup waits on you, to follow the instructions of that mail. In case you really don't hear anything from your MG within 24 hours of signing up, post on the OOC forum and ask for someone to help you. One of our team members is usually around.
